In our verbal family history, my great grandfather Hermann Carl Berndt (b. 30 June 1874, Sassin) had his name changed while in the military (1897-99). The reason given is that there were 2 soldiers with identical names. While I have the marriage record from 1899 (spelling Berndt), I do not have a christening/birth record for him. Herman, his wife Albertine Emily (Gnech) and newborn son Paul emigrated to USA in 1900.
1) Does anyone know if this likely or a common practice?
2) Does anyone know if military records exist that could help?
Thanks,
Kurt Berndt
